Classification: Non-Exempt/Part-Time/Hourly
Reports To: Director, Music Program and Lead Teaching Artist
Starting Salary Range: $35-$50 per hour, Commensurate with experience
Hours: 15-20 hours weekly, after-school hours during the school year
Start Date: August 18, 2014

The Music Teaching Artist is entrusted with the musical and social development of iCAN Music Program students. This work occurs after school at a Music Program site in Santa Barbara, CA. To learn more about iCAN, please visit us at www.icansbc.org and on Facebook.
Teaching Artist Responsibilities:

Support the execution of a high quality, community minded, and joyful music program in keeping with the philosophy of the Incredible Children’s Art Network (iCAN) and El Sistema.

Teach musicianship, instrumental technique, and program repertoire to groups of 15-25 elementary school children between the ages of 6-11.

Support other Teaching Artists in large ensemble classes such as orchestra and musicianship, facilitating student learning and engagement. Work with iCAN Music Site Coordinator to support every student.

Prepare daily lesson plans and collaborate on elements of the iCAN Music curriculum with the Lead Teaching Artists and Program Director.

Facilitate the daily setup and cleanup of classrooms positively and respectfully.

Attend weekly staff meetings, one-on-one meetings and periodic professional development
sessions.

Support student performances throughout the school year. Bring an enthusiastic approach to
performance.

Model musical diligence and collaboration for the students. Apply this same attitude to
curriculum planning and performances with other Music Program staff.
Provide a safe, fun and healthy learning environment of musicianship at the highest level and be a role model of citizenship to each student.
Teaching Artist Job Requirements:

Demonstrate musical excellence with at least one string, wind, brass or percussion instrument. Choir teachers should be proficient on piano.

Ability to teach all instruments within the instrument family from beginner level to advanced.

Desire to bring joy, pride, and compassion to ensemble music making, and the ability to convey
this powerfully to young people.

Experience with early childhood education and music pedagogy (Orff, Delacroze, Kodaly) a
plus.

Experience teaching elementary school children in group lessons.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide
range of constituencies in a diverse community.

Interest and ability to be a motivational mentor and role model for students, parents, and peers
as an artist, teacher and citizen.

Spanish proficiency preferred.

Proficiency with Word, Excel, Google and various apps preferred.
Working Conditions:
Position will be situated in multiple classrooms at Franklin Elementary School in Santa Barbara’s Eastside neighborhood. Must be able to work independently, using good judgment and discretion on assigned tasks and accept direction on given assignments. Requires intermittent standing, walking, sitting, squatting, stretching and bending throughout the workday.
