ABOUT CALARTS

CalArts has a multidisciplinary approach to its studies of the arts through six schools: Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music and Theater. CalArts encourages students to explore and recognize the complexity of the many aspects of the arts. It is supported by a distinguished faculty of practicing artists and provides its Bachelor and Master of Fine Arts students with the hands-on training and exposure necessary for an artist's growth. CalArts was founded in 1961 and opened in 1969 as the first institution of higher learning in the United States specifically for students interested in the pursuit of degrees in all areas of visual and performing arts.

 

ABOUT THE CALARTS COMMUNITY ARTS PARTNERSHIP

The award-winning CalArts Community Arts Partnership (CAP), a co-curricular program of the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), offers free, after-school and school-based arts programs for youth ages 6-18 in every discipline taught at CalArts. Programs are offered at public schools, community centers and social service agencies, covering a thousand square mile radius across Los Angeles County. With classes led by a teaching corps of accomplished CalArts faculty, alumni and student instructors, CAP participants learn to create original works of art and to experiment with prevailing conventions of artistic expression. CAP’s success has served as a model for other arts education organizations locally and nationally, and the program has received numerous honors, including The President’s Committee on Arts and Humanities’ National Youth Program Award, which recognizes exemplary programs that foster the creative and intellectual development of America’s children. 

 POSITION SUMMARY

The CAP Program Coordinator is primarily responsible for administration of all aspects of assigned in-school and out-of-school arts education programs for youth.  This position coordinates logistics for CAP programs in animation, film, programming, coding and interactive media, including arts education and arts integration programs for youth, as well as professional development programs for CalArts Alumni and public school teachers. 

 

The CAP Program Coordinator position reports to the Managing Director.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS (included but are not limited to):

 

Program Administration (30%)

·       Leads administrative aspects of assigned CAP programs, and supports and manages Lead Instructors.

·       Coordinates all logistics, including scheduling programs, ordering equipment and supplies, arranging transportation, etc.

·       Recruits youth participants for CAP programs, fields youth participant inquiries, manages concerns, and implements participant code of conduct.

·       Conducts monthly site visits to evaluate program quality and effectiveness and completes individual program evaluations using CAP program assessment tools.

·      Reviews curricula, outlines, lesson plans, contact lists, etc. for each assigned program, and compiles and maintains an archive of applicable lesson plans.

·       Implements assessment of youth participant learning and instructor performance through assessment tools to measure the impact of CAP’s overall programming.

·       Creates a safe learning environment for CAP youth participants and student instructors. Abides by the rules, regulations, policies and directives of CalArts and CAP as they now exist or as may be adopted by CalArts and/or CAP during the appointment period. Ensures that instructors follow all CAP Policies & Procedures at CAP Program Sites.

·       Completes data entry and ensures timely updating of program and partner information, and participant records in CAP databases, including program curricula, lesson plans, contact information and attendance records.

·       Works with CAP Senior Management to develop individual program budgets on a yearly basis, and works with the CAP Finance Manager to implement and monitor the budget.

·       Provides timely information about assigned programs and works closely with Managing Director on all aspects of fundraising for CAP programs, including cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.

·       Works closely with the Managing Director on the implementation of program evaluations.

·       Works closely with the Managing Director on all aspects of communications about assigned programs and promotes programs through social media, print publications, advertising, press releases, email, publications, and websites.

·       Documents program activities through video, photography, interviews, surveys, etc.

·       Provides classroom support as needed.

·      Maintains assigned storage areas.

 

Instructor Supervision (25%)

·       Works with CalArts faculty and alumni lead instructors to recruit, interview, assign and train student instructors for each program.

·       Supervises CAP instructors in collaboration with CalArts faculty or lead instructors.

·       Verifies student instructor eligibility for employment.

·       Leads professional development training for CAP instructors.

·       Advises CAP instructors, as needed, on lesson plan content and structure, and classroom management.

·       Maintains a high degree of confidentiality at all times on HR issues related to faculty and student status and performances, student and faculty grievances, and other program concerns.

·       Reviews and approves instructor timesheets.

·      Directly supervises volunteers and interns of assigned programs.

 

 

CAP Fellowship Administration (20%)

·       Oversees the administration of CAP’s Fellowship Program.

·       Provides administrative support to CAP Fellows.

·       Helps design and implement intensive training sessions, facilitate seminars and discussion panels, distribute relevant and timely research to fellows, assess fellow performance and evaluate fellowship program based on participant feedback.

 

Community Engagement (10%)

·       Cultivates relationships with school teachers, school administrators, community organization leaders and parents.

·       Serves as first point of contact for partner administrators on program logistics.

·       Actively participates in community building and engagement with program partners.

·       Represents CalArts and the CAP program in public, including partner organizations, prospective students and their families.

 

Event Management (10%)

·       Plans and produces culmination events, film screenings, readings, exhibitions and performances for programs in collaboration with Lead Instructors

·       Implements procedures and practices for the management of culmination events

·       Works with CAP Senior Administrative Assistant to arrange transportation for field trips and events.

·       Assists Artistic Director and Managing Director in fundraising and public relations events.

 

Program Development (5%)

·       Brainstorms, researches and proposes with CAP staff the creation of innovative, new programming, and any other new ideas that support and enhance CAP’s mission. 

·       Assists in developing study guides, instructor handbooks, how-to-videos, training and evaluation tools, and other educational materials in collaboration with staff and lead artist instructors.

·       Participates in national peer group meetings, conferences and professional development trainings.

·       Keeps abreast of trends in higher education, arts education, adolescent development, and youth leadership development, community arts and teacher training.

 

Other duties as assigned.

 

EXPERIENCE

·       Five years at minimum of professional experience in coordinating arts education programs for youth in digital media, including arts integration programs and professional development training for public school teachers.  Experience at an institution of higher education highly preferred.

·       Experience with filmmaking, animation, editing, media theory, digital literacy, critical studies, computer programming, software coding, web design, digital fabrication, and gaming.

·       Three years of experience supervising personnel.

·       Five years of experience in implementing program evaluations and student assessments, including data collection strategies, survey implementation, data analysis, and reporting.

·       Experience in student development and leadership theory in higher education.

·       Demonstrated commitment to social justice in education.

·       Knowledge of current research associated with arts education and K-12 curricula, key policies in K-12 education (NCLB, ESEA, Common Core, etc.) and the California State Visual and Performing Arts standards

·       Spanish and/or Korean language proficiency (written and spoken) a plus

 

EDUCATION

·       Master’s Degree in Media Studies, Digital Media, or a related field.

·       Advanced experience and familiarity with Macs, Microsoft Office, FileMaker Pro, Apple Final Cut Pro, the Adobe Creative Suite, including After Effects, Premiere, Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Illustrator, Autodesk Maya, DragonFrame, mobile apps, software coding, as well as open source software

·       Ability to attend assigned programs and work on Saturdays throughout the academic year, as well as occasional extended hours, including evenings, as needed.
