The annual Richard E. Sherwood Award for emerging theatre artists is a $10,000 award designed to nurture innovative and adventurous Los Angeles theatre artists of promise. The Sherwood Award’s goal is to cultivate these artists and invite them to engage in a professional relationship with Center Theatre Group (CTG). Applicants must be dedicated to improving the future of their respective artistic fields, demonstrate leadership qualities, and push existing boundaries. Artists are not limited by title, role or genre and must have a relationship to the art of performance. In addition to the $10,000 awarded to the Sherwood Award recipient, two remaining finalists will each receive $2,000 honorariums.

About the Sherwood Award application process:

There are three stages in the Sherwood Award application process.

First Stage (June-July): Applications are reviewed by the Sherwood Artistic Programs Coordinator, the Sherwood Intern, and an external reviewer. Artists should clearly represent and articulate their innovation. Candidates’ professional history and one work sample will be reviewed, and an assessment will be made about where they are in the arc of their careers.

Second Stage (July-August): A total of 10 semi-finalists will be asked to submit two further examples of work to be reviewed. These applicants are reviewed by the External Sherwood Panel of Los Angeles theatre professionals who will make recommendations to the Sherwood Artistic Programs Coordinator and the Sherwood Intern. These applicants will then be invited to interview with the Sherwood Artistic Programs Coordinator and Intern, at which point they will discuss their submitted work.

Third Stage (September-November): Three finalists will interview with the Sherwood Panel comprised of Dee Sherwood and CTG artistic staff. By this point, all members of the Panel will have reviewed the candidates’ work. We will announce and celebrate all three Sherwood Award Finalists in early October, involving them in Center Theatre Group and our initiatives, leading up to the Award Announcement at the Ovation Awards in early November.
