The Time Travel Marts are storefront gift shops in the front of both 826LA writing centers in Echo Park and Mar Vista. The whimsical store sells unique items for time travelers as well as 826LA’s student publications. All funds raised in the store support the free writing and tutoring services 826LA provides at its centers and throughout Los Angeles at high-need public schools. The TTMs are central to 826LA’s fundraising strategy, brand identity, and volunteer outreach efforts.

826LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

826LA is searching for someone who:

  • Has retail know-how and/or hands-on experience managing a store and staff
  • Strong ability to multi-task, work independently to meet tight deadlines, solve problems quickly and creatively in a fast-paced, demanding environment while maintaining strong personal integrity
  • Exceptional communication and customer service skills, both written and interpersonal
  • A strong work ethic, a collaborative spirit, a positive attitude, and a sense of humor
  • Detail-oriented, organized nature, and the ability to balance a budget and achieve sales goals
  • Possesses some knowledge and/or aptitude of graphic design and familiarity with Adobe CS
  • Knowledge of website maintenance (Shopify or similar POS) and basic Mac computer skills
  • Spanish language skills are desirable
  • Believes enthusiastically in the mission of 826LA

Position responsibilities:

  • Oversees operations of both Time Travel Mart stores (Echo Park and Mar Vista)
  • Hiring and providing supervision and training to store employees and oversees shift scheduling
  • Maintains and documents store finances, procedures, operations, and systems
  • Organizes inventory, purchasing, and manages budget; implements and maintains systems to keep the store functioning efficiently
  • Ensures the selling floor is well stocked, clean, and organized and reflects high visual merchandising standards established by design coordinator
  • Creates and hosts store-themed events to promote store attendance and sales, and orchestrates volunteer outreach in the store
  • Strategizes and executes product launches, seasonal campaigns, and displays with design coordinator
  • Responsible for a store team that is fluent in 826LA history and programmatic knowledge and a positive attitude with contagious enthusiasm for 826LA and its various communities
  • Works with programmers to train store staff for outreach to families and parents, and keep store staff current of program schedules and sign-up processes
  • Directs outreach through various social media platforms and coaches TTM staff to develop content
  • Assists in the development and production of new store products under direction of design coordinator
  • Ensures every customer enjoys a fun, informed experience in the store
