Art Teacher Job Description


Teaches knowledge and skills in art, including expressive activities in collage, printmaking, modeling, constructing, drawing, painting, color, art history, appreciation, and judgment. Utilizes course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate teaching guides and references. Demonstrates techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and modeling, using standards and/or teacher-prepared instructional aids. Develops instructional plans and organizes class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and student activity. Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate the variety of instructional activities being carried on simultaneously. Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to provide an orderly and productive studio environment. Instructs pupils in care and safe use of tools and equipment. Organizes storage areas and controls use of school-owned materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse. Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions of pupils' work for the school and community. May sponsor art exhibits from outside sources. Performs basic attendance accounting, gathers data, prepares reports, and updates records as assigned. Collaborates with other faculty to align California and district standards with student coursework both within art classes and other courses on campus. Articulates with post-secondary institutions to assure entrance requirements are met, as well as students being prepared for further successful post-secondary study.


Must have earned a Bachelor degree. Possession of a valid California teaching credential that authorizes instruction in art.

EXPERIENCE: Evidence of successful teaching of students with handicapping conditions in a special, regular, or supervised training assignment.

KNOWLEDGE OF: Some experience teaching Art at the High School level desirable.

ABILITIES: Demonstrates ability to work with students, teachers, administrators, and parents; communicates easily and effectively, both orally and in writing.
