GAVLAK is looking for a motivated and experienced Gallery Manager and Registrar to oversee operations out of our Los Angeles location. Ideal candidate will be extremely detail-oriented, highly organized, and a talented communicator, who thrives in a fast- paced environment. This position is full time with competitive salary and benefits package and will report directly to senior staff.
Position Summary:
The Gallery Manager and Registrar position is responsible for the physical upkeep of the Los Angeles gallery, management of Gavlak’s consigned artworks, databases and archives, and logistics originating from the west coast as well as international operations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
• Management and updating of Artlogic Database, including entering new
artworks, updating artwork statuses, and the creation of lists and Private Views.
• Categorization and archiving of artwork and installation images onto Gavlak’s
internal server
• Creation of shipping quotes in collaboration with outside vendors
• Management of gallery FedEx account
• Assessment and implementation of art packing strategies on a per-artwork
basis, for both storage and shipping
• Oversight of all inbound and outbound deliveries
• Inspection and condition reporting of all incoming and outgoing artworks
• Manage gallery inventory at on-site and off-site storage
• Liaising with clients regarding shipment costs and timelines
• Liaising internally with Palm Beach staff and gallery artists regarding timelines
and needs when coordinating on current and upcoming gallery programming
• Remote and on-site coordination of Art Fairs, including preparation of
application materials and return of time sensitive administrative documents.
• Place framing, and wall vinyl orders related to Los Angeles exhibitions
• Organization and management of labor and photography related to exhibition
changeovers, including, when necessary, assisting art handlers in order to
maintain exhibition related timelines.
• Creation of consignment and loan agreements
Desired Skills and Experience:
• Minimum 2-3 years of gallery experience in art handling and gallery
administration related roles strongly preferred
• Advanced degree preferred in an art related field preferred
• Ideal candidate must have excellent communication skills as well as be detail
oriented and personable, candidates must be comfortable interfacing regularly with clients and vendors
• Experience in handling and hanging various types of artworks, as well as knowledge of best practices in packing, fine art storage, and transportation are required
• Capability of managing multiple short- term and long-term projects without supervision is required
• Valid CA driver’s license required
• Ability to use personal vehicle for work is strongly preferred
• Experience operating moving vans and box trucks strongly preferred
• Ability to comfortably lift up to 50lbs required
Compensation:
• This is a full-time, overtime exempt position. Salary is 50 - 65k annually
• The gallery is glad to offer mileage reimbursement as well as a competitive health care package instituted after a 30 day probationary period
Duties of this position will be carried out at the Downtown LA gallery location, as well as occasional offsite travel and occasional work travel opportunities related to art fairs. Hours of operation are Tuesday – Saturday, 10 AM to 6 PM. Occasional after hours may be required around special events which include but are not limited to exhibition openings and art fairs.
