The University of Southern California is seeking applicants for the position of Associate Director, Individual Giving for the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. In 2012, USC received a transformational gift from philanthropist Glorya Kaufman to establish a new school of dance. When founded, USC Kaufman was the first new school to open at USC in close to 40 years. In fall 2015, the school opened its doors to its first cohort of students pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts. The following fall, the school officially opened its doors to the newly-built facilities, the Glorya Kaufman International Dance Center. In May 2019, USC Kaufman graduated its first cohort of BFA students.

Reporting to the Director of Advancement, the Associate Director, Individual Giving will manage a portfolio of individual prospects and donors ranging from $1 up to $100,000, and have primary responsibility for leading the school’s annual giving efforts, setting strategy and executing fundraising plans for sustaining and growing the number of annual donors, the size of individual donations, and converting annual donors to major donors. Such strategy and planning shall include the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual donors and prospects, as well as the implementation and oversight of the USC Kaufman annual fund for alumni, parents and friends. The Associate Director, Individual Giving will support the Director of Advancement on special projects and manage Advancement related events both within the School and externally. The Associate Director, Individual Giving works independently and also coordinates activities with those in other units of University Advancement and other schools at the university.

Candidates should have proven communications skills including experience in writing direct mail appeals, e-appeals, websites, and social media communications. Demonstrated knowledge of MS Office Suite and familiarity with fundraising databases and social media platforms necessary. Candidates should be highly motivated and energetic, have an outgoing personality and ability to initiate and sustain direct communication with donors and potential donors; and will show initiative and work independently. Commitment to working with an ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic community of students, faculty, staff, parents, and donors mandatory. This position is exempt and may require some limited travel. Expected salary range is $65,000-$75,000. All applicants must submit a cover letter.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategies for identification, solicitation, and cultivation of donors that will grow annual revenue from individuals;
  • conduct research to update and expand donor base, manage all annual fund appeal campaigns, manage and monitor online giving initiatives, meet with funders and draft gift proposals as needed;
  • work collaboratively with other program areas within USC Kaufman to advance fundraising goals;
  • conceptualize and implement membership programs, such as the Dean’s Circle, designed to attract annual fund donors, including development and fulfillment of donor benefits;
  • manage Advancement related events with the goal of ensuring an exceptional donor experience, with a focus on cultivation and stewardship;
  • coordinate events logistics, including managing vendors, managing program and event budgets, tracking guests and preparing post-event evaluations;
  • oversee database management, gift processing and gift recognition, and related donor correspondence;
  • provide recommendations for the Advancement department’s fiscal year operating budget;
  • assist Director of Advancement with new funder prospecting, including: research, analysis of fit and preparation of briefings for non-Advancement staff when needed;
  • manage parent stewardship program including a periodic parent newsletter and e-blasts;
  • working in conjunction with student services, develop and implement a new alumni relations program;
  • work with communications team to develop strategies for an Advancement presence in all school communications on the website and in social media;
  • develop and maintain USC Kaufman Advancement printed collateral and support materials for specific fundraising activities;
  • maintain accurate and complete records of donor communications, and monitor expenses related to membership and annual giving programs;
  • manage projects assigned to support staff and/or student worker.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Education Bachelor’s degree. Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education. Minimum Experience 3 years direct fundraising experience for a university or arts organization with volunteer management and/or event management. Preferred Experience 5 years Qualifications · Highly motivated and energetic, ability to show initiative and work independently. · Outstanding interpersonal skills, project coordination experience, and the ability to work well with all levels of internal management and staff, as well as outside clients and vendors. · Excellent verbal and written communication skills. · Experience in the areas of organizational planning and management. · Experience with budgeting, planning and project administration. · Ability to handle diverse, simultaneous tasks, meet deadlines, and attend to follow-through. · Active knowledge of the arts philanthropic community preferred. · Some evenings and weekends required; some travel may be required.
