The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) is seeking a part-time Gallery Attendant (up to 20 hours per week) for its Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery (LAMAG) location. Established in 1954, LAMAG is the longest running institution in Los Angeles devoted solely to exhibiting art. The gallery focuses on artists from Los Angeles – in particular underrepresented artists whose work may not otherwise have found a platform. The exhibitions, educational and public programs aim to inspire conversation about the contemporary issues and ideas that resonate most with the people of Los Angeles.

Reporting to the Art Curators, the Gallery Attendant will assist with facilitating visitor experience, supporting exhibition maintenance, and supporting daily operations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Gallery Attendant’s key responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Facilitates a welcoming, positive and informative environment for all visitors by sharing information on the gallery, exhibitions, programming, answering questions, and generating sociable experiences and conversations
  • Maintains a high level of professionalism and customer service to visitors and staff alike
  • Maintains art exhibitions, programming and galleries including completing opening and closing procedures, completing daily artwork condition checks, and completing incident reports
  • Maintains clean and orderly work areas at all times, specifically front desk and lobby area
  • Patrols the gallery and stays vigilant in assigned areas to protect exhibitions
  • Ensures gallery and visitor policies are upheld at all times
  • Opens and closes galleries, including turning on and off any video or other tech
  • Maintains organized and accurate reporting on visitor attendance and experience of the gallery
  • Assists with exhibition openings, public programs and special events by providing setup of AV, chairs, recording, and other needs as requested
  • Assists with the marketing and promotions of exhibitions and programming
  • Assists with the organization and maintenance of materials and databases
  • Abides by and upholds all City, Department, and Gallery protocols, policies, and procedures
  • Occasionally be assigned to other duties for training purposes or to meet technological changes or emergencies

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Availability during the week, weekends, holidays, and some evenings as needed; AND
  • Familiarity with computers and Google Suite programs including Drive, Forms, Docs, Sheets, and Mail;
    AND
  • High school diploma or GED

Hourly Pay Rate: $16.78

This is a part-time, as-need/at-will position with a maximum of 20 hours per week. Standard working hours are between 9 AM and 5:30 PM PST. This position does not include health benefits, vacation, or sick time. Part-time positions accrue compensated time-off after six months in the position.
