About the Position

Reporting to the Director of Education, the Manager or Sr. Manager of In-School Programs and College Access is responsible for the implementation of the larger vision of 826LA’s In-School program to fulfill and support the goals set by 826LA. The Manager or Sr. Manager ensures that 826LA engages at least 2,500 students throughout Los Angeles by providing classroom support to teachers, overseeing at least four Young Authors Book Projects annually, and providing Personal Statement Workshops to high school juniors and seniors.. The Manager or Sr. Manager of In-School Programs and College Access is responsible for creating and sustaining lasting relationships and partnerships with schools, administrators, school districts, and teachers in the diverse communities that 826LA supports and is a part of. The Manager or Sr. Manager of In-School Programs and College Access creates exemplary projects with the goal of supporting teachers and their work in the classroom, increasing students’ engagement in writing assignments while building skills, confidence, and the awareness of themselves as writers. The Manager or Sr. Manager of In-School Programs and College Access is responsible for the success of college access programs at 826LA, and 826LA’s efforts to close the achievement gap and increase college application and admittance.

Position responsibilities:

  • Leads the In-School program at 826LA and ensures the integrity and quality of projects with teachers, students, and volunteers, through the coaching and support of In-School staff;
  • Oversees and coordinates the implementation of the In-Schools program including annual publication projects, ad hoc teacher support projects, and the management of teacher relationships and partnerships, Supervises In-Schools Program Coordinators in all parts of their jobs
  • Directly oversees the Writers’ Rooms at Manual Arts High School , Roosevelt High School, and Venice High School
  • Supervises and supports the Writers’ Room Coordinators;
  • Trains and supervises In-Schools support interns
  • Identifies opportunities to maximize the capacity of the Director of Education, including taking on time sensitive/reactive projects and requests, suggesting different systems and/or procedures to increase efficiency
  • With the support of the volunteer team, recruits and trains volunteers for In-School and Writers’ Room projects and program and create strong relationships with volunteers
  • Ensures correct student-volunteer ratio in programs, and facilitates quality interactions between students of various ability levels and volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds and experience levels
  • Updates, revises, and implements college access curriculum, projects, partnerships, and professional development at 826LA, and supports all staff and programs as college access is implemented
  • Manages off-site college access programs, including Personal Statement Day and Scholarship Day
  • Coordinates with teachers, administrators, college counselors, and other community-based organizations to plan and execute programs that align to school-wide initiatives in literacy and writing
  • Responsible for accuracy, timeliness, and organization of program evaluations and data reports
  • Responsible for recruiting, hiring, and training programming staff for the all In-Schools program
  • Collaborates with advancement and team on storybanking and social media, supporting prospective donor tours, and creating program spotlights and activations during 826LA events.

  • Curriculum Development. Experience writing and implementing high school and middle school writing curriculum
  • Creativity. Experience experimenting and iterating curriculum to ensure lively, engaging, academic enrichment programs.

The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate they have:

  • BA or BS required, teaching certificate preferred
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the writing process in an educational setting
  • A passion for writing, education and especially 826LA’s mission;
    Strong communication skills, both written and interpersonal
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong ability to multitask, adapt, and solve problems creatively in a fast-paced environment
  • Classroom management experience preferred
  • A commitment to incorporating and prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of 826LA programming desired
  • A strong work ethic, a collaborative spirit, the desire to support programs team members, and a sense of humor desired
  • Ability to to travel to different schools throughout Los Angeles in a given work week
  • Proven supervisory experience leading, supporting and managing staff
  • Spanish/English bilingual preferred.

Compensation: 

  • The annual salary range for this position is $60,000-70,000 commensurate with experience.
  • This is non-exempt, full-time position Workdays are Monday through Friday, and the flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required is necessary.
  • The position will dedicate two-three days per week to directly supporting the Venice High School program with the remaining time allocated for other duties, including supervising staff and supporting other school partnerships.
  • Benefits include 15 days of vacation for the first 2 years, 20 days after that, time off for federal holidays, participation in 826LA’s health care plan at 100% coverage as well as 50% coverage for family members, a full coverage dental plan, 401K plan with employer match, and life insurance plan.
