Reporting to the Director of Principal Gifts, the Principal Gifts Officer secures funding for LACMA in the five to six figure range by managing a group of assigned donors and prospects in order to obtain continuing or new support, and upgrading their giving and involvement from year-to-year. Managing a portfolio of 100-125 individuals, the Principal Gifts Officer works collaboratively with and in support of development staff, curators and other museum representatives to cultivate and solicit donors for museum-wide priorities. The Principal Gifts Officer monitors and manages prospect contact to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations.


  • Manages prospect activity for a portfolio of 100-125 individuals and participates in all aspects of the gift cycle
  • Develops cultivation and target ask strategies through establishing a fluent understanding of LACMA– the museum’s strategic vision, budget, programs, plans and impact of the program – in order to successfully communicate and represent the organization with constituents
  • Qualifies donors and prospects to establish a caseload
  • Develops consistent annual plans for contacts and asks for each individual prospect, and works with key Museum staff and volunteers to develop strategies for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship on a variety of fundraising initiatives
  • Establishes financial goals for each constituent in their portfolio, working towards closing both cash and art gifts annually
  • Researches current donor networks, other program participants and event attendees for new prospects; works collaboratively with all development-related departments (membership, annual patrons program, exhibitions and restricted program support, planned giving and research), and staff from all Museum content areas in order to prepare written proposals and meet fundraising goals
  • A thought-partner in developing meaningful, inclusive programs to bring in donors outside of the established donor base at LACMA
  • Supports giving groups and international work as needed
  • Tracks donor activity in the Tessitura database using LACMA’s prospect management system, following established protocols, and reviews reports to assess activity and performance
  • Provides staffing assistance for donor related events
  • Performs other duties or special projects as assigned


  • The expected annual salary for this Los Angeles, CA based position $65,000 – $70,000 subject to change, and the position is eligible for LACMA’s comprehensive benefits package, including pension plan.
