City: West Hollywood
Position Seeking: City Council

Question 1: Please share a meaningful experience you had with art (visual, dance, drama, music, media arts) while growing up and its impact on you.

Growing up outside of New York City I was always exposed to the fine arts. I had so many experiences with all of the arts, especially Broadway it is difficult to pick out one.

My first musical was probably my most memorable experience which was 1776 in 1969.

I had never seen such costumes and singing live. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

Question 2: What do you believe the role of City Council should be in developing and supporting the region’s arts and cultural infrastructure?

I think that the City Council should be the driving force to bringing more Arts to the city. They are always saying it is the Creative City yet we just don’t really offer anything significant in the way of the performing arts.

Our little theaters are nice but can barely stay in business. LA is a cultural wasteland for performing arts as a whole. West Hollywood should be a “Little New York” when it comes to offering the arts.

Question 3: What’s your vision for the city? What role, if any, does art and culture play in advancing that vision?

I have always believed in West Hollywood having “The West Hollywood Media Center” . It should have a full sized theatre with a professional stage for Musicals, Drama, Dance and even orchestral performances.

The center should also have a small theater for showing special independent films. The studio for WHPA public access and city channel 10 should have a home there and the City should have its own radio station.

We spent 40 million dollars on a parking lot. We spend money on fountains and new council chambers and a park, but not a penny on the arts.

Money for this can be raised through endowments and through wealthy corporations and individuals who are philanthropists for the arts.

I cant stand seeing one more commercial bix box property go up while we are starved for a decent venue for the Arts.

Questions 4: A recent report by the Otis College of Design found that 1 in every 6 jobs in LA County supports the creative sector and economy in Los Angeles County. If elected, how will you aim to ensure the continued vitality and growth of the creative economy and the artistic community that it supports?

Building a media center would definitely provide jobs in that sector. Other people like artists and musicians also need to be here in the city.

I have already recommended that we build city housing with micro units. Young creative people would be able to live in the City and pursue their art be it music, dance, painting etc.

Currently the city is going in a direction that will only make it less appealing both visually and financially to the creative set.
