Job Summary

As a member of the Education, Public Programs, and Interpretive Content (EPPIC) department, the Manager for School Programs will oversee the development, delivery, and evaluation of innovative programs for school communities, and student and teacher audiences. The successful candidate will have broad knowledge of K–12 and museum education best practices; Common Core curriculum; diversity, equity, access, and inclusion principles; as well as familiarity with the Los Angeles educational ecosystem. This position is also responsible for one of the largest K–12 school visit programs in the country, and will oversee daily operations for the successful scheduling and deployment of museum staff to accommodate over 700 students participating daily. The individual in this role makes a significant impact on the department’s mission to actively engage student and teacher audiences locally and nationally. He or she may interpret, execute, and recommend modifications to department policies, systems, and efficiencies, and programmatic scope and scale. The Manager of School Programs oversees three School Program Coordinators and the Education Specialist for Teacher Programs, and reports to the Head of Education.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Support staff in coordinating daily school visits: communicate with schools, teachers, and chaperones.
  • Work with docent program and gallery teaching staff to coordinate and train over 130 school-group docents .
  • Oversee the allocation of the museum ’s Title I bus fund initiative: analyze and report budget to leadership on a quarterly and annual basis.
  • Assist in the development of the Getty’s strategy and suite of content for students and teachers based on key aspects of education theory that fulfill strategic learning outcomes for each program, tour, professional development, etc.
  • Cultivate professional relationships and partnerships with relevant institutions and individuals to ensure the vitality and diversity of the EPPIC department.
  • Develop curriculum and program material for internal and external distribution, including but not limited to planning documents, websites, grant proposals, reports, etc.
  • Assist in leading a creative team of artists and educators in the conceptualization and delivery of innovative programs for student and teacher audiences.
  • Prepare annual budget with the Head of Education and Assistant Director of EPPIC; budget oversight tracking and reporting of all department spending.
  • Support and help design a quality museum experience online and on-site for teacher audiences through project and program development, including managing teams of educational advisors, content specialists, partner organizations, and contractors.
  • Develop goals and objectives and implement projects using museum engagement strategies to meet the needs of classroom teachers.
  • Manage projects; determine priorities and action items; prepare and manage project budget; provide supporting documentation and updates as necessary; collaborate across departments as required.
  • Communicate and collaborate extensively with internal and external experts in various fields, including teachers, school administrators, curators, museum educators, and artists.
  • Train educators and educational support staff, observe and assess programs, and supervise staff.
  • Develop and teach gallery classes for educational audiences.
  • Work to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of, the visual arts by working with teacher audiences.
  • Collaborate on the creation of digital resources for teacher audiences.
  • Conceive and implement training and professional development opportunities for teacher audiences.
  • Effective networking with and benchmarking against school programs at cultural institutions around the country.


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3 to 6 years of supervisory and/or project/process management experience
  • Proficiency in standard business software

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Master’s degree in museum education, art education, art history, or closely related field strongly preferred
  • 5–8 years of supervisory, project/process management, and subject area experience preferred
  • Experience working with student and teacher audiences
  • Proven knowledge of current museum and art education practices, curriculum development, child development, classroom management, and arts integration strategies
  • Knowledge of and experience in gallery-based teaching and art interpretation; demonstrated ability to effectively teach with works of art and to design lessons and develop curricula
  • Strong presentation and teaching skills, great attention to detail, and strong diplomatic and mediation skills
  • Interest in keeping current with research, trends, and practices in formal and informal learning environments
  • Ability to think creatively and use new technologies to expand outreach and program impact
  • Proven knowledge of visual arts practice, local artists, and creative resources
  • Proven ability to succeed within a collaborative work environment
  • Proven ability to accurately prioritize and lead concurrent projects
  • Ability to juggle shifting logistics and priorities
  • Knowledge of marketing and social media practices
  • Proven experience planning, forecasting, and managing a budget
  • Proven ability to work independently and take initiative
