Madison Avenue Park Mural Project

LA Commons is searching for a mural artist to work with a core Youth Arts Team (Age 15-25) to collect community stories, attend neighborhood story summit, design and paint mural on a new building at the new Madison Avenue Park in East Hollywood. The lead artist will work with a team of youth artists age 15-25 to design, will finalize the design and lead the team to paint the mural. The lead artist and youth arts team members will meet weekly and the youth artists will also be paid a stipend for their work. LA Commons will coordinate project partners, supply gathering, workshop space and recruitment of the Youth Arts team. The lead artist will lead the workshops, attend the story gathering and lead the team through the design, approval process and painting of the mural.
Project Partners: The Trust for Public Land, the Cahuenga Library, and the Los Angeles Community Garden Council
The Role the Lead Artist/Designer in this project will be:
- To participate in story/image gathering process and events with the group to inform the designs for the murals
- To mentor the Core Youth Arts team to foster youth in the development of skills in mural design and painting the mural
- To finalize the mural design and respond to feedback from mural approval process as required by the City of Los Angeles, Department of Recreation & Parks and the Department of Cultural Affairs
- To create lists of materials and supplies needed for the mural
- To lead the team to paint the mural
2017 Timeline
January - Orientation
February- March Story Gathering and Design – then pause for permission process
July - Paint Mural (Painting schedule will be determined by construction schedule)
Artist Qualifications:
- Experience in visual arts and public art
- Experience working with youth and community
- Familiarity and experience with East Hollywood
- Experience creating murals and public art
Compensation
$5000 stipend for lead artist work
(The paint, supplies, youth artist and youth mentor fees from a different budget)
