Arts for LA Journalism Internship

Arts for LAArts for LA seeks an undergraduate or graduate journalism student with an interest in arts & culture, education & social justice for a fall 2011 Arts Journalism internship.  The intern will act as Arts for LA’s field reporter and contribute content to  The website is highly trafficked and popular among the cultural community.  Intern will receive byline credit, and some articles or blogs may be featured on the homepage and/or disseminated to Arts for LA’s 20,000 subscribers. 

Intern will set his/her own hours, and may work offsite after initial training if desired.  Number of hours per week is flexible as the internship is largely task-based; hours will be determined by the intern and supervisor.  It is anticipated to be no more than five hours/week from September through December 2011.   The internship is unpaid, but staff will work with colleges & universities to arrange for credit. 

The intern will be working with the Advocacy Manager, who will be building Arts Education Advocacy Teams in communities throughout Los Angeles County.  The Arts Journalism Intern will travel with him to select convenings & trainings, and then report on the initiative’s successes, challenges and benchmarks.  The Arts for LA staff looks forward to working closely with the intern, providing mentorship, website training, and the opportunity to publish new stories and blogs on a popular site. 

Skills Required:

  • Strong & compelling writing (blogs & news stories).
  • Interview skills.
  • Basic research & data collection skills.

Skills Preferred:

  • Bilingual, English/Spanish.
  • Interest in photojournalism/ability to take photos of events covered.


  • Attend community events, workshops and meetings, usually during the day but sometimes in the evenings, with a goal of four per month.  Schedule of events can be flexible based on intern’s school and work schedule.
  • Write a monthly or biweekly blog for, focusing on topics such as Arts for LA’s community organizing activities & the cultural life, aspirations and successes of the communities we serve.
  • Write news reports on issues affecting the arts on an as-needed basis.
  • Develop local media contacts.
