As a California native with Peruvian roots, Joan Manuel graduated from UCLA in 2009 with a B.A. in History and Latin American Studies. During his time at UCLA, he had the privilege to work with numerous community outreach and arts education programs where his main focus was making arts accessible to underprivileged youth throughout South Central LA and the greater Los Angeles area.

In 2010, his passion for the arts and social justice lead him to Africa where he focused on HIV prevention and coordinated different community events in an effort to spread awareness and education with a student-run NGO, One Heart Source. During his experience in Africa, Joan Manuel used music as a catalyst to share culture and consciousness both within Tanzanian classrooms and amongst orphaned youth affected by HIV/AIDS. Joan Manuel is currently a freelance percussionist in Southern California and can’t get enough of Cuban music.
