Bennett Kayser has officially won the runoff election for LAUSD School Board 5th District seat after an extremely close election. The Los Angeles Times reports that Kayser won by only 600 votes, receiving 10,700 total votes in an election with less than 10% voter turnout.
Kayser was endorsed by United Teachers Los Angeles, school administrators and several other labor groups. His opponent, Luis Sanchez, was endorsed by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and LAUSD School Board president Monica Garcia.
The District 5 LAUSD school board spot has been held by Yolie Flores, who chose not to run for re-election.
Mr. Kayser completed Arts for LA's Candidate Survey on arts education in February 2011. Please click here to read his responses.
