LAUSD/UTLA Agreement Would Restore 134+ Arts Teachers
United Teachers Los Angeles has reached a Tentative Agreement (TA) with Los Angeles Unified School District that would restore at least 134 elementary arts teachers in 2011/2012. The TA will be voted on by UTLA members on June 2nd and 3rd, with the results announced June 4th. Under the current provisions of the agreement, 134 dance, music, visual arts and theatre teacher positions would be restored to the Elementary Arts Program.
UTLA estimates the agreement would save at least 3,400 jobs, comprised of 1,722 elementary and secondary teachers and 1,680 additional positions, including arts educators. These educators had previously received Reduction in Force (layoff) notices for the 2011/2012 school year.
The TA, which is available for download below, includes 208 restored positions for grades 6-8. There is no breakdown by subject, so it is unclear how many secondary arts teachers would be included in that number.
Additional position and program restoration may be available based on local budget decisions, retirements, and the restoration of class size and student-to-teacher ratios to 2010/2011 levels.
UTLA has released a statement on the tentative agreement, available for download below.
