Participate in Local Redistricting Hearings This Week

Tue, 01/03/2012 (All day)

Redistricting Public HearingsRedistricting Hearings will be held in city districts throughout Los Angeles from now through January 10, 2012. Advocates are encouraged to attend and provide public comment. The results of the 2010 census mean the lines of your city council district (CD) may change. Some city council districts may expand or lose areas, and the City needs your input. They want to know what “makes” your neighborhood for you.  Attend your Public Hearing on Redistricting before the first maps are drawn. All Public Comments go on the record and are used in the decision-making process.

How do you feel about the areas of LA where you work and play? Do you want more of your neighbors to know who you are and what your art offers within walking distance? Do you have ideas on how to connect, but don’t know where to start? Did you ask yourself just the other day: What is something tangible I can do to help more people appreciate art?    Participating in the redistricting process can have an impact on all of these issues.

Why does Redistricting matter to artists? Here are some of consultant Cindy Marie Jenkins' ideas. Not sure what to say? This might help.    The process is much more effective if you can participate with Public Comment as well as attend. Everyone gets two minutes and the Commission must take it into consideration.  The Comment Form is here along with ideas of what insight they seek.

Another true value in this scenario is that you get to meet a couple hundred of your neighbors at once, who may not even know your theater or arts organization exists.  No matter how visible your sign or advertising, people usually need an invitation before they’ll enter your theater, or any arts organization. Meeting those who live closest to you can be an incredible boon to your audience. In addition, the entire room hears how valuable your work can be to your community.  The remaining Public Hearings are tonight through January 10th. Full list below.
