SMMUSD 5th Graders Embrace "Ballroom Madness"
As part of the Arts for All Residency Grant Program, arts provider Ballroom Madness and McKinley Elementary School in Santa Monica-Malibu USD are involved in a beautiful mash-up.
A room full of 5th graders practiced their tango, salsa and swing moves as music from the 1940s to present day played from an iPod. Dressed in suits and ties, Ballroom Madness teachers Daniel Ponickly and “Mr. James” were masterful at easing the kids into unfamiliar poses and movements. Not one bit of “cootie” calling was heard. The students are treated with respect and learning respect for each other is emphasized in the teaching. And what about bullying? Ponickly said that it’s harder to bully someone with whom you just did the cha-cha!
