The Skirball Cultural Center seeks dynamic and friendly On-Call Educators to facilitate public programs within Noah’s Ark, the Skirball’s interactive exhibition for children and families, as well as the Archaeology Dig and other outdoor spaces.

On-Call Educators are part of a collaborative team that implements participatory programs for families of all types, especially those with young children. They facilitate family learning through activities such as full-body puppetry, movement, percussion and singing, cooperative games, storytelling, and art-making. They also serve as hosts within the gallery, imparting key Noah’s Ark messages and helping to maintain a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment. As needed, they co-teach inquiry-based Noah’s Ark school programs designed for Pre-K through Grade 3 students. They support all aspects of family programming, indoors and outdoors, as needed.

On-Call Educators report to the Manager of Noah’s Ark and Family Programs. The position is scheduled on an as-needed basis, primarily on weekends and holidays with pay of $19 per hour. There are also occasional weekday shifts during morning school programs, afternoon public hours, and employee trainings.

Responsibilities

-Work collaboratively with Skirball team members to ensure successful experiences for family visitors, students, and community groups, including facilitated and drop-in experiences, table-based activities, and participatory movement, music, and puppetry.
-Convey key Noah’s Ark and Skirball messages and values through programs and meaningful visitor interactions.
-Help maintain a safe and friendly environment, proactively address customer service and operational issues, and troubleshoot as needed.
-Integrate and apply feedback from supervisors to achieve program goals and standards.
-Contribute to the development of gallery programs, drop-in performances, and visitor interactions as requested.
-Reset and maintain Noah’s Ark and Family Programs spaces, including ongoing daily prop sanitizing.
-Assist in preparing, keeping inventory, and organizing materials for programs.
-Work as a member of the team to ensure timely implementation of daily opening/closing procedures.

Qualifications, Experience, and Attributes

-Background in arts education, acting, public speaking, puppeteering, storytelling, early childhood education, archaeology, and/or related fields
-Prior experience working with children and families; interactive, informal teaching experience preferred
-Must be proficient in one or more of the following specialized areas: acting, puppetry, movement, music, storytelling, improvisation, or visual arts
-Must have excellent public speaking and interpersonal skills; warm and welcoming manner and ability to engage positively with people of different ages and abilities
-A team player with a professional, positive attitude
-Physical ability to work long hours that require agility (kneeling, crouching, lifting, sitting on floor, etc.) and sustained high energy level
-Physical ability to work outdoors in variable conditions (heat, cold, etc.)
-Actively committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice principles
-An active interest in the Skirball Cultural Center mission and philosophy
-Basic knowledge/understanding of Jewish cultural practices desirable
-Fluency in spoken Spanish preferred, but not required
