Menlo Park, CA
Contemporary Art Gallery Seeking “Performance Guides” for "The Institute Presents: Neurosociety"—an immersive theater exhibition.
The Institute is an arts and science laboratory that conducts research in the areas of neuroscience, cognitive behavior and psychology. The Institute’s new program, “Neurosociety” seeks to show participants how our reality is in fact virtual reality through 4 experiments.
Is life a play without an author? The “theater of the mind” authors itself. The “play” uses extremely limited “sets”—our brains collect a restricted impression of the world, limited vocabulary (our senses) write the script and biased grammar (our attention, memories and biases) constructs a world useful for us. Our brains give history and meaning to these sets.
What seem to be limitations and biases are in fact creative advantages. We, as social beings, and our neural networks write and rewrite the play. We function as performers playing out roles that we script for ourselves. Our malleability rewrites that script to adapt and possibly improve our societies.
“Neurosociety” demonstrates how we write that play and consists of a series of four rooms that participants enter, in small staggered groups, in a prescribed order.
Performers of all ages, ethnicities and genders to play the part of Institute fellows who guide participants through the experiences and conduct the experiments. Beneficial if you have an interest in/understanding of popular science.
