DESCRIPTION
Position Title: PIONEERING ARTS TEACHER
Description: The Pioneering Arts Teacher will lead inventive domestic arts classes for our Summer Arts Camp
Status: Seasonal Full-time; Monday through Friday for 9 weeks; on site at facility
Start Date: June 11, 2018
End Date: August 10, 2018
Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:30AM – 5:30PM
Pay rate: $1000 per week
Requirements
- Three years experience teaching art to youths, preferably elementary school age
- Experience working in a summer camp environment
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work with a variety of ages, personalities and skill levels
- Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, self-control
- Demonstrated ability to generate innovative creative projects that engage individual campers and work well in a group setting
- Confidence and experience managing a group of up to 25 students at a time
- Live Scan certification and TB clearance
- Familiarity with VAPA standards a plus
- Experience working in low-income communities
- Proven ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment and proven ability to work under only general supervision
- Reliable transportation: automobile, current drivers license, automobile insurance
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities Prior to Camp:
- Work collaboratively with the Director of Education to develop age appropriate projects for Summer Arts Camp
- Be familiar with phone locations, first aid station, information station, etc
Responsibilities During Camp:
- Plan, organize and execute domestic arts projects for campers, age 6-12
- Prepare weekly advance lists of all materials necessary for creative projects
- Expose students to art techniques, methods, and creating art as a form of self-expression
- Provide leadership, encouragement and artistic inspiration to campers
- Inventory supplies at the end of the week in order to determine what will be required for the next session
- Prepare, present and clean up daily camp projects
- Maintain a professional, neat and clean appearance at all times
- Have crafts, supplies, equipment, etc. all set up and ready to go, 10 minutes before the scheduled start project
- Monitor the inventory of arts and crafts supplies to assure proper allocation of supplies to all campers throughout the summer
- Ensure that all art material is properly used and cared for by all campers and report any damages or loss of equipment
- Participate in Arts Camp kick-off meeting with fellow teaching artists, Director of Education, CFAER staff, TAs
Responsibilities Post Camp:
- Fill out assessment form
Proposed Curriculum should include:

Gardening and horticulture
- Teach about native plants, vegetable and herb gardening
- Plant-based drawings/art-making
- Sculptural and mixed media projects with a theme such as flower paper making, terrariums, shadow boxes

“Pioneer Arts”
- Wood carving, candle making, doll making, sculpting, etc.
- Draw on diverse histories to inspire innovative projects (e.g. fort building)

Cooking
- Create garden inspired cooking projects
- Teach weekly cooking lessons

Textiles
- Create projects that involve textile making including sewing, fabric dyeing, printmaking, and weaving

The mission of Center for the Arts Eagle Rock (CFAER) is to provide innovative, multidisciplinary, arts-inclusive programming and arts education to the diverse communities of northeast Los Angeles and beyond.
Our arts camp for ages 6-12 explores visual art, performance, sculpture, architecture, textiles, writing, and more. Our teachers are local, contemporary artists who combine art history, play-based learning, and their own studio practices to create curriculum that gives campers the opportunity to explore artistic expression and establish community.
During the school year, Center for the Arts Eagle Rock is proud to present Afterschool Arts: Imagine Studio, a free arts enrichment program providing standards-based arts instruction in elementary and middle schools throughout Northeast Los Angeles.
