Colburn School
Los Angeles, CA
Posting Number: 0000321
Position Type: Faculty
Position: PROFESSOR OF CHAMBER MUSIC
Department: Conservatory Academic
Position Summary: The Professor of Chamber Music is a full-time position, supervising a comprehensive strings and piano chamber music program for the Conservatory and providing the vision and structure for sequential chamber music training at all levels. S/he will administer the program, and in conjunction with applied faculty, form ensembles, select appropriate repertoire, report grades, and provide oversight for coaching and rehearsal scheduling. The string and piano chamber music program also incorporates wind instruments for exploration of the major string, piano and wind chamber music literature.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The role will oversee all chamber music performances, including off-campus performances in coordination with the Community Engagement and Advancement Offices, and providing advisement to the Artistic Administration for the Colburn Chamber Music Society.
The Professor of Chamber Music will collaborate with the Music Academy and Community School in planning masterclass and other opportunities for all Colburn students.
In the Conservatory, curricula for all strings and piano include chamber music every semester (winds, brass and percussion have their own requirements). Each semester, approximately 25 chamber groups are formed and are scheduled for weekly coachings except when the Colburn Orchestra is rehearsing (approximately 1 week per month). Most applied faculty coach 1-5 ensembles; the Professor of Chamber Music will both distribute the coaching load and function as the primary coach, working with 12-16 ensembles each semester. In addition, s/he will mentor advanced and interested ensembles toward a professional career, providing guidance and recommendations for festivals, competitions, and external performance opportunities.
All chamber ensembles are required to perform at least once during the semester to obtain credit; the Professor of Chamber Music is the primary coordinator of these performances in various settings: Chamber Forums, Community Engagement opportunities, and off-campus performances, among others.
Education and/or Experience Requirements:
The ideal candidate will have:
- made a significant and notable contribution to the field of chamber music (with a preference for string quartet experience) and achieved national or international recognition;
- a record of excellence and innovation in instructional activities related to chamber music at the highest level;
- strong collaborative skills and the ability to work with all areas of the school and faculty;
- successful experience in an administrative role;
- and strong entrepreneurial, outreach, and communication skills.
Special Instructions to Applicants: Review of applications will begin immediately, and the position will remain open until filled. Primary consideration for finalists to be invited to campus will be in late October, with on-campus interviews for finalists in November 2021.
Applicants must submit a detailed cover letter detailing their qualifications and suitability for the position and a curriculum vita, listing the names and contact information for 3-5 references.
