826LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this in mind we provide after-school tutoring, evening and weekend workshops, in-school tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of our free programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.


826LA is looking for two Programs Managers, one to oversee each 826LA site based in Echo Park and Mar Vista. The Programs Manager holds a unique position within 826LA, and leads each 826LA location through managing a team of program and volunteer staff, long-term planning and goal setting, staff professional development, and overseeing site operations. The Programs Manager works closely with other lead program and volunteer staff to ensure that programs are running the best possible, and following the objectives set out in the 826LA strategic plan. The Programs Managers fulfill various Human Resource needs as required by their team, are a part of the 826LA leadership team, and report to the Executive Director.


Position responsibilities:

  • Oversees team of program and volunteer staff in Echo Park or Mar Vista, depending on location, and provides support for staff to create and fulfill long- and short-term goals according to the 826LA strategic plan;

  • Works with cross-town Programs Manager to ensure consistent and successful programming is happening through appropriate collaboration, communication, and resource-sharing across 826LA sites;

  • Works closely with other lead staff to monitor and provide professional development and coaching to all program and volunteer staff;

  • Builds and sustains relationships with multilingual families, volunteers, community partners, educators, and schools, and manages partnerships and projects as needed;

  • Is the liaison to outside partnerships and potential projects for students, and manages each of those partnerships as needed;

  • Is responsible for the hiring, training, and on- and off-boarding for staff within team;

  • Works with the other Programs Manager and Institutional Giving Manager to ensure smooth collection of programmatic data, and works with 826 National to ensure all evaluation needs are met;

  • Works with leadership team to set and deliver staff meetings, team meetings, and all-staff retreats;

  • Responsible for site operations and maintenance;

  • Supports programs, volunteer needs, and events as necessary;

  • Co-manages 826LA’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiative in collaboration with the Leadership Team;

  • Reports to the Executive Director.


The ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate they have:

  • Enthusiastic belief in the mission of 826LA as evidenced by a passion for writing, reading, literacy, and teaching;

  • A passion to improve literacy and a deep commitment to student success;

  • Minimum of 3 years experience teaching writing or managing educational programs with students ages 6-18 in an urban setting, and experience managing volunteers a plus;

  • Experience with HR protocol and guidelines preferred;

  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and interpersonal;

  • Excellent organizational and managerial skills, and the ability to both oversee large-scale projects and manage a team of staff members;

  • Strong ability to multi-task, be flexible, and solve problems creatively in a fast-paced environment;

  • A strong work ethic, a collaborative spirit, high emotional intelligence, and a sense of humor;

  • Written and verbal Spanish skills strongly preferred;

  • Experience in, and knowledge of, book publishing and design a plus.

This position is full time, and the flexibility to work some evenings and weekends is necessary. Benefits include three weeks vacation, participation in 826LA’s health and dental care plan, 401K, and life insurance plan. Salary is commensurate with experience. Position start date is flexible.
