Artists in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE)
Artists in Residence in Everglades (AIRIE) invites artists, writers, choreographers, composers and scholars to apply for its 2020 residency opportunity. In partnership with the Everglades National Park, AIRIE operates a live/work residency with a mission to support and enhance the arts and cultural heritage of the Everglades subtropical wilderness.
Artists live, work and create in the Everglades for one-month periods, occupying a small apartment inside the park and interacting at different levels with AIRIE, Park representatives and the public. Residents are provided a $1000 mini-grant from AIRIE, a furnished, air-conditioned studio apartment inside the park, 24/7 access to the over 1.5 million acres of Everglades and are introduced to park rangers, scientists, biologists, artists, cultural and community leaders that enhance their understanding of the unique and fragile ecosystem of the Everglades.
Residency experiences are tailored to the interests of each individual artist, creating opportunities for independence and solitude, as well as interaction, collaboration and public engagement as each artist desires.
AIRIE’s purpose is to inform, connect, and support artists, writers and musicians who wish to be ambassadors for the Everglades by providing month-long residencies in the Park. Spanning the southern tip of the Florida peninsula and most of Florida Bay, Everglades National Park is the only subtropical wilderness in North America. It is known for its rich wildlife, particularly large wading birds, extraordinary mangrove systems and it is the only place in the world where both alligators and crocodiles coexist.
