Retail Manager (full-time)

This is a full-time temporary position expected to start February 2023 and ending November 2023.

About the Exhibition
Organized and curated by the family of Jean-Michel Basquiat – his two sisters, Lisane and Jeanine and his stepmother Nora Fitzpatrick - this exhibition of over 200 never before and rarely seen paintings, drawings, multimedia presentations, ephemera and artifacts will tell the story of Jean Michel from the intimate perspective of his family, intertwining his artistic endeavors with his personal life, influences and the times in which he lived. His contributions to the history of art and his exploration into our multifaceted culture - incorporating music, the black experience, pop culture, African American sports figures, literature, and other sources – is showcased through immersive environments providing unique insight into Jean-Michel’s creative life and his unique voice that propelled the social and cultural narrative that continues to this day.

This experiential event designed by David Adjaye Associates first opened in New York City in April of 2022 and is now opening in LA, March 2023 and possibly other cities. As part of the exhibition there will be a curated event space where community, creative, and educational programs will be held.

Position Overview
The Retail Manager will play a critical role in the establishment and future success of the retail store, leading the retail experience, merchandising plan, and managing the retail team.
Start date – February 2023
The installation will be open to the public until November 2023

Main Responsibilities

Oversees Retail and E-Commerce Operations Team
Oversee, coordinate, and perform sales transactions and cash management utilizing POS
Monitor sales through the POS system; resolve discrepancies, prepare, reconcile, and record cash receipts for deposit, and prepare sales reports
Supervise retail associates, which typically includes recommendations for hiring, firing, performance evaluation, training, work allocation, and problem resolution
Assist with the development and implementation of operating policies and procedures consistent with those of the organization
Provide sales coordination and problem resolution for retail associates; perform direct sales and customer service as and when required
Develop staffing schedules, ensuring that all floor requirements are covered during operating hours; fill in for staff as required during breaks and other absences.
Recommend products to buying team based on customer feedback
Maintain the visual merchandising strategy set forth by design team and provide recommendations for adjustments to improve performance
Understand and communicate to consumers the relevance of each retail product as it relates to the exhibition
Develop creative selling methods (Upsell. Gift giving, etc.)
Manage the receipt of orders via the retail system and verify against invoices, resolve errors and discrepancies as appropriate
Coordinate shipping and/or delivery of merchandise to customers when requested. Ensure stock levels are maintained throughout each day
Ability to lift a maximum of 40 lbs based on needs of the role
Monitor general housekeeping cleanliness within the area; ensure equipment and facilities remain in good repair, and that employee and customer safety standards are maintained
Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned
Perform opening, closing and mid-shift duties to ensure a clean and ready retail store for customers
Maintain Health and Safety precautions in all working areas to comply with good practice, policies and procedures
Ensure retail associates are informed of loss prevention measures

E-Commerce Team Responsibilities:

Overall responsibilities include but are not limited to perform and assist the operations department with fulfillments, order picking, packing, distribution of products, perform quality control tasks, and ensuring proper categorization of inventory
Assist with order picking, packing and shipping related work.
Categorize inventory in the database, and receive inventory.
Responsible for shipment and fulfillment of all orders and product allocation.
Work under pressure while meeting immediate goals, deadlines, standards, and expectations
Take on additional duties as assigned by leadership
Skills and Desirable Qualities
Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a retail manager
A passion for the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat
Working knowledge of standard POS systems and stockroom operations systems
Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures
Experience in High Volume Sales
Knowledge of retail stock management and control principles and procedures
Ability to summarize and reconcile retail sales and operating statistics, and to prepare routine statistical reports
Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
Ability to lift up to 40 lbs, stand for long periods of time, reach, kneel, stoop, and climb ladders
A motivating role model with a passion for training and developing people
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
Knowledge of retail floor sales techniques and visual merchandising as well as E-Commerce Fulfillment
Must have a genuine love and desire to interact with people
Fluent in Spanish, or one foreign language a plus
