The Social Justice Learning Institute (SJLI) will partner with Connectopod Learning to create a year-round podcast program that will recruit youth throughout Los Angeles and surroundings areas that is designed to (1) help youth understand the value of utilizing art, through public broadcasting, as a tool to inform and inspire social action, (2) develop their capabilities of writing and sharing stories for change, (3) teach the technical skills of developing a podcast and producing segments, (4) showcase their work in public spaces that encourage dialogue and civic engagement, (5) expose and prepare youth for careers in the arts, (6) create an online portfolio readily available for internship and college applications.
The year-round program will inaugurate with a 5 week summer residency program. During this residency, youth will evaluate the historical portrayal of their communities, learn to create and produce alternative and nuanced stories, and be given the opportunity to share their art with the public.The culminating event will be a Podcast Launch on August 4th. Friends, families, and neighbors are welcomed to join and participate in the launch.
The course will take place every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3pm - 5pm and Saturday from 9am - 2pm for the entire month of July and first week of August. The location will be at the SJLI office at 600 Centinela Ave., Inglewood 90302.
