Symphonic Jazz Orchestra “Music in the Schools”

TEACHING ARTISTS

Now in its 13th year, the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra’s (SJO) “Music in the Schools” residencies serve over 4,000 elementary students each week in 13 schools across five school districts. The yearlong residencies serve students in Watts, Compton, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Lennox and Culver City. The program offers a variety of unique residencies: Kindergarten – Intro to Music & Percussion: solfege, rhythm patterns, note reading, song & dance, percussion 1st Grade – Playing the Bells: rhythm patterns, note reading, playing bells (glockenspiel) composing 2nd Grade – Advanced Bells: rhythm patterns, note reading, playing bells (glockenspiel) composing 3rd Grade – Bach to Bebop: Intro to the orchestra families, classical composers, blues, jazz, composing blues songs, improvisation Our teaching artists are freelance musicians that are experienced educators. Preference is given to those teaching artists with classroom experience and/or work with elementary aged students. On average, our Teaching Artists work 2 days a week, 2 – 5 teaching hours a day throughout the school year Sept. through June. The pay for first-year teaching artists is $40 per teaching hour, plus 1/2 hr. prep time each week.
