Length of Residency: Nov. 2019 – Feb. 2020 with possible extension and or additional placements

Schedule: M, W, F and or assigned with school calendar

Designation: Part-time, Non-exempt

Salary Range: $35 - $42 per hour, instructional rate

Start Date: November 4, 2019

Position Description

P.S. ARTS is dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing arts education to underserved public schools and communities. P.S. ARTS is the only organization in Southern and Central California that provides yearlong arts education in dance, music, theater and visual arts to every child in a school during the regular school day. Without our programs, children in these underfunded school districts would not have access to the arts.

Position Summary:
P.S. ARTS Teaching Artists are equal parts professional artist and professional educator. As the P.S. ARTS employees "on the ground," Teaching Artists have the unique opportunity to have an impact on the entire school community, in and outside of the classroom. Teaching Artists create and deliver high-quality, authentic and engaging curriculum, become a trusted part of the school community, and contribute to a school climate and classroom environment that is inclusive, creative and aspirational.

In addition to a regular teaching schedule, Teaching Artists will perform administrative duties related to correspondence, professional development, student learning and pedagogy and community dynamics. As will all P.S. ARTS employees, Teaching Artists take part in a comprehensive performance management program which includes a mid-year check-in and an end-of-the-year performance review. Teaching Artists also model P.S. ARTS values of Art/Creativity, Community, Equity, Innovation and Excellence.

Qualifications and Training:

  • Minimum two years teaching experience. Experience teaching an art form, during the school day within a public-school setting is preferred. Work with low-income communities is also preferred.

  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge and expertise in a specific arts discipline.

  • Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of or a familiarity with the California Framework for the Visual and Performing Arts.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a school environment and with various school communities.

  • B.A., M.A. or M.F.A in Theater or in a related field preferred

  • Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred.


  • Develop a sequential, standards-based curriculum in the arts;

  • Submit documentation of teaching practice, including curriculum and lesson plans using P.S. ARTS’

    online mapping program;

  • Teach theater arts for middle school students (grades 6 – 8) and or across multiple grade levels;

  • Address the learning needs of diverse student populations;

  • Identify and plan cross curriculum connections in and across multiple subject areas;

  • Represent P.S. ARTS amongst multiple school community stakeholders, including classroom teachers,

    parents, administration and donors;

  • Apply knowledge and skills through ongoing professional development into teaching practice;

  • Respond to emails and other communications in a timely manner.

Working Conditions:

Teaching Artists will routinely:

  • Lift, push, pull or carry art supplies, equipment, instruments and classroom furniture weighing up to 40 lbs.

  • Bend, twist, reach, stand and/or sit for long periods of time.
