Location: Compton, Los Angeles

Reports to: Teaching Artist Program Director, Director of Ensembles

Hours:  Exact days/hours vary based on assignment

Compensation:       $55 per hour 

                                $25 per hour for required training, professional development sessions and concerts held throughout the year


Start Date: August 2018, exact date to be determined based on assignment. Accepting applications until June 15, 2018.



The Young Musicians Foundations' Teaching Artist Program exists to bring high-quality music instruction and experiences to schools and communities that lack access to music education. Our program provides instrumental, vocal, and general music instruction to youth ages 4-17 throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Through high-quality instruction delivered by exceptional Teaching Artists in a safe and inclusive environment, our students develop perseverance, creativity, confidence, and leadership skills. Our vision is to provide access to exceptional music education opportunities, creating experiences that strengthen communities through social, cultural, and intellectual engagement. It is through the joy of music and music-making, and the empowering of our students, that we build relationships and cultivate strong and vibrant communities.


Essential Job Functions

  • Teach group classes to beginning, intermediate and advanced middle school students
  • Integrate VAPA standards as applicable and apply knowledge to lesson plans
  • Attend training and professional development sessions
  • Support and attend student performances
  • Maintain a safe and nurturing environment for students
  • Facilitate in the daily set-up and cleanup of classrooms respectively
  • Track and maintain student attendance
  • Create detailed substitute lesson plans and arrange for substitute coverage
  • Submit time sheets and behavioral reports
  • Must be able to clear a TB test and Live Scan background check (required by sites before your first day of teaching)


Required Qualifications

  • Four-year undergraduate degree in music/music education or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated excellent musicianship and artistry as a teacher/performer
  • Extensive knowledge of repertoire, curriculum and pedagogy
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Interest and ability to be a motivational mentor and role model for students, parents and peers
  • Punctual; attention to detail and deadlines
  • Reliable transportation


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with children from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds; exposure working in underserved communities
  • Post-graduate degree or equivalent experience
  • Bilingual in Spanish
