THEATER OPERATIONS MANAGER

The Theater Operations Manager is responsible for all general (non-stage) operations of the building including safety and security, front-of-house activity, special events, and related stage door coverage as assigned by the Director of Production and Operations at Musco Center for the Arts. This position reports to and assists Musco Center’s Director of Production and Operations and works closely with senior leadership in developing and maintaining theater operations at the highest standards. This position will provide onsite night and weekend event management and must keep flexible working hours.

This position oversees building operations, event related stage door activity, and front-of-house, including student workers, regular and part-time staff members and volunteers.

The Theater Operations Manager provides management and oversight on building systems maintenance and operations, stage door and security operations, as well as oversight, planning and coordination of operational elements for all shows and events. This includes coordination and management of small to mid-sized level ancillary events and special event receptions, and planning and managing set-up and breakdown of non-stage equipment for festival and outdoor events, including interfacing with city and county authorities for permitting. The Theater Operations Manager will also serve as the first and primary point of contact for outside rental clients, providing advance planning, coordination, communication and connecting rental clients with other Musco Center departments as appropriate.

This position works closely with Musco Center Production team and University Public Safety and Fire and Life Safety to ensure all fire, life safety issues and safety equipment are maintained in accordance with laws, regulations and codes. In collaboration with Public Safety and Fire and Life Safety departments, updates and publishes Emergency Action Plan, evacuation plans and other safety-related policy and procedure. Interfaces with Musco leadership and Public Safety departments to determine security levels for each event, and ensures proper security measures are taken. Organizes safety and first aid training for Musco Center team.

The Theater Operations Manager is one of the key representatives of Musco Center in relation to other departments and vendors at Chapman University. This position acts as a liaison with Chapman’s Facilities Management department and outside contractors for equipment and venue maintenance. Works in tandem with Facilities Management to resolve urgent and ongoing building issues. Theater Operations Manager must develop and maintain strong working relationships with concession, alcohol and housekeeping vendors, and other auxiliary contractors and specialized service providers. Also will manage and execute venue space and facilities planning in collaboration with Executive Director, Director of Production and Operations, and Campus Planning Department.

This position manages area budget – duties include fiscal year planning, financial administration, budget management, reconciliations, processing expenses, reporting, forecasting, and tracking of expenses. This position will act as a key contributor to venue management software user group (Artifax) and manage area computer hardware, software, and network technology needs in collaboration with University IS&T Department and other Musco Center departments.

• A minimum of related experience in venue management, building management or front of house management to accomplish assigned duties.
• Proven leadership skills to build, engage, motivate and maintain collaborative teams, improve services and unite with diverse constituents.
• Strong analytical skills to think strategically, evaluate and understand data, identify key areas, develop appropriate solutions and achieve goals and meet deadlines
• Experience developing and managing successful relationships with vendors and organizational partners.
• Strong time and project management skills with the ability to juggle competing timelines and priorities and a gift for getting things done accurately and efficiently; thrives in a busy and changing environment working with multiple inputs and demands for one’s attention
• Intermediate level knowledge of contracts, budgeting, and accounting
• Self-starter. Project initiator and owner from inception to completion, strong communication and follow-up skills possessing perseverance and the ability to finish challenging projects
• Clean driving record holding a current driver’s license able to drive larger vehicles including stake bed truck and passenger van
• Strong oral communication skills to convey accurate information in a tactful and diplomatic manner
• Strong written communication skills to prepare clear, concise, and grammatically correct business correspondence, including solid editing and proofreading skills
• Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, including the ability to foster effective relationships and work with a diverse group of individuals from within and outside the University community
• Willingness to engage in Musco Center and Chapman University’s Cultural Equity initiatives

Salary Range is $63k - $68k annually.
