Photo L.A. is looking for a part-time intern to join our VIP Department.

Photo L.A. is the longest-running international photographic art exposition and its 27th edition will take place at The Barker Hangar in Santa Monica from January 31 - February 3, 2019. Each year we feature a roster of approximately 60-75 local and international galleries, and dealers, in addition to, exhibitions by individual artists, artist collectives, leading not-for-profits, museums, art schools, and established art world booksellers. The fair focuses on an intimate scale of exhibitors to allow each exhibition to gain greater visibility and impact, as well as to foster more personal dialogue between exhibitors and collectors. Using forward-thinking and strategically tailored programming, we engage the arts and photographic community by helping to enrich the participants and visitors experiences at the fair. Our lectures, roundtable discussions, special installations, and docent tours with distinguished members of the arts community draws an informed audience to the three-day event and sparks critical debates about the state and future trends of photography and the art of collecting. The candidate will assist the VIP Department with the following tasks:

  • Creating new VIP target lists and developing outreach strategies and goals
  • Discovering new VIPs and developing additional contact lists
  • Managing partner museum guest lists
  • Implementing VIP database updates
  • Ensuring that key milestones are on track and within prescribed timelines
  • Preparing the VIP system for the opening of the art fair
  • Assisting the VIP Manager during the Private Preview and public opening days of the fair on January 31st – February 3rd, 2019, by checking in guests at the VIP desk, managing the line, handling inquiries and requests from guests and art galleries, as well as providing access to the participants of Photo L.A.’s programs.


All candidates must be available to start in October and have the following skills:

  • Strong research skills and excellent attention to detail
  • Positive attitude and self-motivation
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure
  • The ability to work well alone and as part of a team in a quick, fast paced environment
  • Proven competency in the use of Microsoft Office
  • Previous event and client management experience is preferred


School credit: available

Minimum commitment: 20 days, availability of 2 half-days a week is preferred

Internship dates: 

October 2018 – January 2019 the schedule is flexible (once or twice a week working 4 hours a day, 40 hours total). 
2nd week of January 2019 – 2 full-time days (16 hours), 
3rd week of January 2019 – 3 full-time days (24 hours), 
29 January – 3 February 2019 – 6 full-time days (48 hours)

Location: The candidate will work remotely, at Photo L.A. office in Hollywood and at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica on January 31st – February 3rd, 2019

Compensation: The internship is paid at the rate of $12 per hour
