The Wende Museum was founded in 2002 to preserve the art, culture, and history of the Soviet Bloc countries, inspire a broad understanding of the period (1945–1991), and explore its enduring legacy. Housed for more than a decade in an office park, the Wende moved in November 2017 to an expansive new campus, the iconic former National Guard Armory Building at 10808 Culver Boulevard in Culver City. The Wende’s collection encompasses more than 100,000 holdings, ranging from consumer products to fine art, political symbols, audiovisual materials, spy equipment, posters, ephemera, commemoratives, books, archives, and personal histories. Named for the transformative period leading up to and following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the Wende promotes rigorous scholarship, educates students, and stimulates general interest through lectures, symposia and publications; illuminates the past and informs the present through creative collaborations with contemporary artists and designers; and challenges and engages the public through experimental exhibitions and interdisciplinary programming inspired by the collection. The museum is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

The Visitor Services Assistant reports to the Visitor Services Lead, serves as visitor liaison, and assists with visitor services and other Museum activities.

START DATE: August / September 2018

SCHEDULE: this part-time position requires regular availability including some weekends and evenings

  • Welcome and direct visitors, respond to enquiries in person and by telephone and email
  • Support event planning and execution. Including VIP visits, receptions, and third-party venue rentals
  • Assist with and prepare food service for in-house events
  • Process gift shop sales, open and close register, and assist with general operations.
  • Provide visitors with information about Museum and distribute education and promotional materials
  • Track attendance, receive visitor feedback, and collect visitor contact and other information
  • Work in constituent management system Altru
  • Open and close the Museum  
  • Take reservations for group tours
  • Perform exhibition tours
  • Ensure public spaces are set-up and tidy for general operations and all types of programming
  • Take appropriate action regarding access, safety, or security issues
  • Perform routine tasks as assigned by team lead, and anticipate daily needs of ongoing activities

Experience - preferred but not required

  • Undergraduate degree in history, arts, museum studies, education, or related field (completed or in-process)
  • One or more years in full or part-time position
  • Visitor service experience in a museum or performing arts setting
  • Retail sales experience
  • Experience working in Altru, Raisers Edge, Salesforce, or other constituent management system
  • Experience with basic credit card processing systems
  • Experience operating a variety of audiovisual equipment

Additional Requirements

  • At least 18 years old and either a U.S. citizen or authorized to legally work permanently in the United States
  • If necessary, be able to pass a drug test with negative results (except under documented medical treatment)
  • Ability and willingness to pass a background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications, Department of Motor Vehicle, and credit checks
