Location: This position is remote and does not require travel. Common Field is a 501(c)3 incorporated in California but our current staff operates 100% remotely, working across multiple states and time zones.

Position Summary:

Working closely with Common Field’s Communications & Operations Manager, the Web Developer designs, develops and maintains Common Field’s web content management application (Hylex) and email hosting infrastructure (Amazon Web Services). The Web Developer will collaborate with staff to gather requirements and architect solutions to content management and other web related technical issues on CommonField.org. As the team’s primary content management system and Web user interface developer, the Web Developer will share recommendations around emerging trends in front end technologies and user experience best practices – with a specific eye to growing and implementing Common Field’s commitments to digital accessibility.

Work Schedule:

The Web Developer should be available up to 16 flexible hours per month, with one 60 minute check-in meeting every two weeks. High priority work may occasionally arise depending on Common Field’s organizational needs, and so contractors will be compensated a minimum of 8 hours/month as a retainer – regardless of total number of hours worked each month.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop and maintain Common Field’s digital operations on CommonField.org and via the Sendy email application hosted on AWS
  • Meet regularly with Communications and Operations Manager to strategize work and maintain steady flow of communication around web development
  • Collaborate closely with Common Field staff to gather requirements and architect solutions to content management and technical issues
  • Build out accessibility infrastructure (alt-text, search functionality, etc…) on existing codebase
  • Make recommendations around and implement evolving best practices with respect to accessibility, user experience, and engagement in response to Common Field’s goals and organizational priorities
  • With finance team, develop longer term resource plan for investing in digital architecture

Requirements:

Working knowledge of:

  • Previous experience and strong working knowledge of virtual platforms and technologies
  • Significant capacity for organizing logistics, anticipating challenges, and tracking detailed information

Job Specifications:

This role has the option of working as a contractor (or freelance) on an annual contract basis or as an employee of Common Field.

As a contractor:

  • You will sign an annual contract with Common Field for services.
  • You will be eligible for a one-time technology stipend per annual contract but will not accrue or earn additional benefits including paid time-off. Common Field has a “Bring Your Own Device” policy for remote work- meaning all staff and contractors must provide their own computer, internet connection, and phone for their work.
  • You will qualify for 1.5x hourly pay rate if required to work on holidays or service is required in less than 24 hours.
  • You will be responsible for paying your federal, state and local taxes. Your pay will not be taxed by Common Field and you will receive an annual 1099 Form from Common Field for your tax reporting.
  • Common Field will provide a monthly retainer fee of no less than 8 hours of pay (or $600). This means that if you work less than 8 hours in any given month, you will still receive $600 that month.
  • You will be paid twice a month unless otherwise requested.

As an employee:

  • You will be an “at-will” Employee as per California state regulations. This means that your role has no defined end date and any end date would be determined by you and/or Common Field.
  • You will be eligible for a monthly technology stipend as Common Field has a “Bring Your Own Device” policy for remote work- meaning all staff and contractors must provide their own computer, internet connection, and phone for their work.
  • You will be paid for all staff holiday hours in addition to hours worked.
  • Common Field will deduct the appropriate federal,state and local taxes from your paycheck. You will receive a W-2 Form from Common Field for your tax reporting.
  • A benefits package will be provided including pro-rated paid time off and healthcare reimbursement.
  • Common Field will offer a minimum monthly payment of no less than 8 hours (or $600.00) to the Web Developer. This means that if you work less than 8 hours in any given month, you will still receive $600 that month.
  • You will be paid twice a month.
