ArtworxLA
Los Angeles, CA
Workshop Coordinator
Part-time Position: 20 hours/week
Reports to Education Program Manager
artworxLA combats the high school dropout rate by engaging students in a long-term, sequential arts program that inspires them to stay in school, evolve as unique individuals, and flourish as creative adults. We bring arts education to over 1000 Los Angeles teenagers annually, providing them with ongoing classroom workshops led by professional artists and opportunities to present their work in major cultural institutions. Programs currently serve 30 alternative high schools across seven school districts in LA County. Workshop Coordinator
The Workshop Coordinator plays a unique and critical part of artworxLA’s model and teaching philosophy. In addition to working alongside a rotating roster of Teaching Artists, Workshop Coordinators ensure that each classroom fosters an effective learning atmosphere. Coordinators build long-term relationships with students, teachers, and school staff over the year. The five schools under this Coordinator position include four in the San Fernando Valley and one in Hawthorne. Coordinators are essential in helping our students participate in artworxLA’s progressively challenging ladder of opportunities.
Key responsibilities of the Workshop Coordinator include:
- Co-facilitate five classroom workshops/week.
- Support Teaching Artists through classroom management and advisement on the art-making process.
- Act as liaison and mediate any confusion or disagreement between students, Teaching Artists, and school staff.
- Understand and support school culture (student goals, classroom rules, school rituals, etc.).
- Nurture students in working toward a common goal and ensure projects are completed by deadlines.
- Install artworks at presentations at cultural partner sites.
- Participate in trainings in trauma-sensitive, healing-centered, and strengths-based strategies for working with youth.
- Manage supply budget, process reimbursement requests, and maintain storage at school sites.
- Maintain a roster of artworxLA student attendance and administer artworxLA evaluation tools.
- Document artworks and the classroom experience through photography and video.
- Attend weekly staff meetings at artworxLA headquarters.
- Report school or Teaching Artist issues to Education Manager in a timely manner.
- Identify eligible students for artworxLA’s Advanced Programs.
