The California Arts Council and Californians for the Arts are celebrating positive steps forward for an appropriation bill of $7 million.  Last Thursday, the California State Legislative Budget Conference Committee voted 8-0 to support the increase in funding for the state's arts agency.

The National Endowment for the Arts announced today it would invest $1.56M in grant funding Los Angeles County arts and culture organizations.  Grantees include organizations staging theatrical productions, providing arts journalism coverage, and museums, among many other types of programs and events.

In response to decades of budget cuts to one of California's most dynamic industries, Sen. Ted Lieu today announced plans to restore state funding for the California Arts Council to levels not seen in more than a decade.

“California is home to one of the highest concentrations of creative individuals in the world,” Lieu, D-Torrance, said in support of the role the 'creative economy' plays in the Golden State. “Artistic services and intellectual capital are essential to the 21st Century economy, which is dynamic, knowledge-based and increasingly global.”

Photo: US CapitolOn Tuesday night, Congress released the details of its massive FY 2014 Omnibus spending bill. A petition circulated by the Arts Action Fund, signed by more than 40,000 arts advocates, reinforced the need to allocate a robust fund to the National Endowment for the Arts. The agency has been budgeted to receive $146 million for the year.
