An interdisciplinary artist with a research-based practice is seeking a part-time Research and Production Assistant. The position bridges studio production and research, supporting material processes, documentation, and organizational systems, as well as archival and bibliographic research related to ongoing projects. The assistant will also provide remote support during international residencies and contribute to research for the artist’s commercial gallery projects.
Current studio projects span writing, photography, film, painting on experimental materials, and sound composition, alongside research into archival methodologies and performance histories. The studio operates as a site of inquiry and collaboration where theoretical and material approaches intersect.
This position is ideal for someone with a background or strong interest in archives, library science, or research-based art practice, who also enjoys hands-on making. The studio values mutual exchange—assistants are encouraged to pursue their own creative or research projects within this environment.
Responsibilities
• Maintain and organize studio archives, both digital and physical
• Conduct art-historical, bibliographic, and institutional research
• Assist with writing, citations, and documentation for publications and exhibitions
• Prepare and maintain studio materials (wood panels, stretched supports, Tyvek, pigments)
• Support photographic documentation and archiving of artworks
• Contribute to fabrication and finishing of experimental works
• Assist with exhibition preparation, packing, and installation logistics
• Provide remote research and file support during international residencies
• Occasional administrative assistance (file management, scheduling, communications)
Qualifications
• Archives & Research: Background or coursework in archives, library science, or information studies; comfort with organizing and maintaining digital and physical systems; metadata or cataloging experience a plus
• Writing & Documentation: Excellent research and writing skills; ability to synthesize and cite materials clearly; familiarity with academic or curatorial writing practices
• Painting & Materials: Experience preparing surfaces, stretching supports, and mixing pigments; applied knowledge of color theory and material behavior
• Photography: Proficiency in documentation (DSLR/mirrorless), basic lighting, and editing (Lightroom/Photoshop)
• Professional: Organized, reliable, detail-oriented; able to work independently and communicate effectively in a collaborative setting
• Growth & Exchange: Active independent artistic or research practice; willingness to learn; interest in contributing to a studio that values mutual learning and creative reciprocity
Salary: $25 hourly
