“IF I CAN DO SHAKESPEARE, I CAN DO ANYTHING!”
The Young Shakespeareans seeks a part-time (afterschool) creative, collaborative Costume & Prop Design Teaching Artist to help young people bring Shakespeare’s stories to life through hands-on design and making.
This role blends theatre design with arts education. You’ll introduce students to costume and prop design, guide them from initial ideas to finished pieces, and help them discover how visual choices reveal character, support storytelling, and spark an audience’s imagination.
TASKS – PAGE to STAGE
Plan and lead engaging, age-appropriate lessons in costume and prop design for high-school students.
Teach practical skills such as sketching, hand sewing, working with found materials, and constructing and decorating props.
Guide students in exploring Shakespeare’s characters and worlds while developing their own creative interpretations.
Collaborate with the directing and teaching team to support rehearsals and performances.
Balance student ownership with production needs, timelines, and available resources.
Manage materials and maintain a safe, organized workspace, teaching appropriate use of tools and supplies.
Create a welcoming learning environment where students with different abilities, backgrounds, and levels of experience can participate meaningfully.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in costume design, prop design, theatre production, or a related creative field.
Experience teaching or facilitating creative work with young people.
A resourceful approach to making with modest budgets, reused materials, and imaginative solutions.
Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
Patience, flexibility, and enthusiasm for helping young artists build confidence.
A commitment to inclusive teaching and young people’s safety and well-being.
Familiarity with Shakespeare, youth theatre, sewing, or accessible approaches to design instruction is welcome. We value relevant professional, community, and lived experience; a specific degree is welcomed but not required.
