Job Title: Teaching Artist – Music Engagement Teachers (Schools – PreK– 8th Grade) & Ensemble & NMS

Employment Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt

Reports To: NMS Director

Position Summary
Neighborhood Music School seeks enthusiastic, creative, and collaborative Teaching Artists to provide engaging music instruction in community engagement programs. Teaching Artists inspire young musicians through high-quality, culturally responsive instruction while serving as educators, mentors, and collaborative team members.

Primary Responsibilities
• Deliver engaging, high-quality music instruction using approved curriculum.
• Supervise, encourage, and motivate students in a safe, inclusive environment.
• Teach weekly small-group after-school and/or weekend classes.
• Collaborate with fellow Teaching Artists and NMS staff.
• Communicate professionally with students, families, and partner schools.
• Maintain attendance and program documentation.
• Assess student musical growth and learning outcomes.
• Develop curriculum aligned with program goals.
• Prepare materials and set up/break down classroom spaces.
• Attend required meetings and professional development.
• Represent NMS at performances and community events.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
• Musicianship as an instrumentalist or vocalist and music teaching skills.
• Experience teaching beginning and intermediate students.
• Passion for working with children.
• Strong classroom management and communication skills.
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Reliable transportation to community partner sites.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Education, Arts Education, or related field.
• Master’s degree preferred.
• Spanish language proficiency.
• Experience teaching group music classes.
• Experience working with culturally diverse communities.

Required Employment Qualifications
• DOJ/FBI Live Scan clearance.
• Current TB clearance.
• Authorization to work in the U.S.
• Valid California driver’s license, reliable transportation, and insurance (if driving).
• CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain if required.
