Technical Designer
The Big New is looking for a full-time Technical Designer to join our growing team in Los Angeles. This position is ideal for a technically skilled and creatively driven designer with experience in digital modeling, fabrication workflows, and production development for contemporary art and architectural projects.

Working collaboratively with artists, designers, architects, developers, and institutions, we deliver cast and fabricated metal sculpture, integrated architectural artwork, and multidisciplinary fabrication projects across the United States. Our team engages in every phase of project delivery — from concept development and technical design through fabrication, logistics, and installation. We are seeking a highly organized, technically minded, and collaborative Technical Designer to join our growing Los Angeles team.
Position Summary:
The Technical Designer is responsible for developing artistic concepts into production-ready fabrication assets for cast and fabricated metal artworks. This role supports projects through all stages of technical development including CAD modelling, digital sculpting, 3D scanning, drawing package preparation, and fabrication coordination.
The position works closely with project managers, fabrication teams, foundries, and subcontractors to ensure artistic intent is successfully translated into achievable fabrication methodologies and installation-ready deliverables.
The ideal candidate is highly detail-oriented, technically proficient, and comfortable balancing creative problem-solving with practical production requirements in a fast-paced fabrication environment.

Key Responsibilities:
• Technical Design & Development
Develop and refine artwork models and fabrication-ready assets using Rhino 3D
Prepare technical drawing packages, assembly drawings, and production documentation
Develop digital sculpting, scanning, and pattern strategies for cast artworks
Prepare print-ready 3D files and coordinate part identification and assembly systems
Translate artistic concepts into production-ready fabrication workflows
• Fabrication & Production Coordination
Coordinate with fabrication teams, foundries, and subcontractors throughout production
Support casting, assembly, and finishing methodologies for metal artworks
Collaborate with Project Managers and Operations teams to support project execution
Monitor project progress to ensure quality standards and design intent are maintained
Assist with installation planning and fabrication logistics coordination
• Technical Innovation & Workflow Support
Support development of efficient digital and procedural workflows
Contribute to company knowledge libraries and technical documentation standards
Collaborate on design problem-solving and fabrication methodology development
Support integration of scanning, modeling, 3D printing, and digital fabrication workflows
Assist with coordination between internal teams and external consultants as required
Qualifications:
• Have a passion for the arts, fabrication, and technical problem-solving.
• Relevant experience in art fabrication, industrial design, architecture, sculpture, or related industries.
• Experience or familiarity with metal casting and fabrication processes.
• Strong understanding of technical drafting and production documentation workflows.
• Demonstrable analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced fabrication environment.
• Have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle for travel to workshop.
Skills:
• Expertise modeling with Rhinoceros 3D required.
• Familiarity with Rhino layouts and production drawing sets required.
• Familiarity with 3D scanning workflows required.
• Familiarity with or willingness to learn Grasshopper workflows.
• Experience with ZBrush sculpting is a plus.
• Experience with 3D printing software and workflows is a plus.
• Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite experience preferred.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
• Desire and ability to work collaboratively with teams in-person.

Salary: $30 – $35, hourly
